Our source of inspiration for this class is Rilke’s poetry, and his universal wisdom in Letters to a Young Poet. I am delighted to be teaching with Sabine Danielzig*, German artist and calligrapher. Together we will create an atmosphere of inquiry and hands-on exploration of text and image, and of what Rilke means when he says:

"Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”

I have discovered that although I understand little German, there is a depth and magic in exploring Rilke in both English and German. There is a natural and profound kind of listening when we hear something in another language, when there are students of more than one language in the room.

Rilke's advice is timeless, and we will cultivate a contemplative atmosphere where understanding deepens:

In this there is no measuring with time, a year doesn't matter, and ten years are nothing. Being an artist means: not numbering and counting, but ripening like a tree, which doesn't force its sap, and stands confidently in the storms of spring, not afraid that afterward summer may not come. It does come. But it comes only to those who are patient, who are there as if eternity lay before them...
