Intuition & Imagery | Ghost Ranch, New Mexico

The Latin root of the word intuition means ‘seeing within’. All of us have moments that involve a sudden inexplicable knowing, an awareness of truth without explanation. These experiences enhance our creativity, our communication, and the feeling of meaning in our lives. There are many ways in which intuition can be cultivated and one of the most powerful is through the use of imagery, which is the visible expression of inner realities. Developing the discernment to penetrate form and grasp the reality within is the practice of intuition.

Calligraphers work with words, with language. But you don’t need to be a calligrapher in order to make dynamic marks, to create visual letters and words that are alive.

In this class you will explore in your own language, words that have significance or power. The process of investigation will include movement, ligatures and rhythm in a line. This process naturally leads to work that has both expression and graphic power.

We have responded to your requests and have made this annual class a day longer.

The stone is contained, representing stillness and structure. The tree expands toward the sky, representing movement and expression. In developing one’s own voice in the creative pattern, there is a balance that needs to be maintained between form and expression. One must learn a form well enough to internalize it. This mastery of form leads to freedom of expression.

The eye is the third element, the observer, who notices and notates. In this class we will explore form, expression and observation in the continuum of drawing, painting and writing. Line is the unifying element.

What came first, drawing or painting?

Monastery Retreat | Master Class for Advanced Calligraphers

At the dawn of civilization, when writing and painting were the same thing
(line) was the basic element.
– Paul Klee

Are you interested in exploring the place where writing and painting meet with fellow advanced calligraphers? To explore the infinite variations of line, and crossing the line? To see how inspiration flourishes in a group of creators gathered in intention and contemplation?

We have the opportunity to spend a week at the St Meinrad Archabbey in rural Indiana. We have a spacious workspace with access to the abbey's library of old manuscripts. This retreat is a natural setting for calligraphic study and experimentation.

Letters and Patterns (2 days):

In this class we will explore alternate letterforms with wide pens, gouache, watercolor and ink. There is pleasure and discovery in making patterns and color, whether you are a beginning or advanced student. Students will document their wok in a pattern book.

Absence and Presence (3 days)

The blank page, the white canvas– these are universal symbols of absence for the writer, painter, calligrapher, or maker. Fear and doubt often rise to the surface. It is humbling. How, I wonder, can I ever improve on the possibility inherent in this nothingness?

Absence is the creative force, the initiation, the spark, for the making of anything "new".

All levels of experience are welcome.

Quintessence: The Fifth Element | Taos, New Mexico

The theme for 2019 is Quintessence: The Fifth Element.

We've all heard of the ancient Greek's four elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. What is the fifth element, without which those four could have no ability to combine into the infinite variety of forms we see around us? How do you name the nameless things? The fifth element the Greeks called aether, and the medieval alchemists called quintessence.

Quintessence: The Fifth Element | St Meinrad Archabbey

The theme for 2019 is Quintessence: The Fifth Element.

There are many names for the invisible force that moves makers. The title here comes from my background in Greek mythology, but it is a universal theme for the mystery, for what we cannot measure or sell.

At St Meinrad, the focus is on lettering in a natural and contemplative atmosphere. Our western calligraphic heritage is soaked in the monastic traditions, where the art of calligraphy thrived because of monasteries and nunneries in the Dark and Middle Ages. At St Meinrad, we get to practice being scribes, and improvising with ink, paint, paper, graphite and pens.

Our source of inspiration for this class is Rilke’s poetry, and his universal wisdom in Letters to a Young Poet. I am delighted to be teaching with Sabine Danielzig, German artist and calligrapher. Together we will create an atmosphere of inquiry and hands on exploration of text and image, and of what Rilke means when he says:

“Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”

Together we will create an atmosphere of inquiry and hands-on exploration of text using pens, brushes, shells and any other tools for making marks. The physical act of writing is a way to explore and deepen meaning.  What does Rilke mean about time, about understanding, when he says:

We will document our exploration in a small book.
