Beginning: Entering the Blank Page

Beginning is a word that invites possibitlity: birth, dawn, genesis, nascence, initiate, commence, inaugurate. In the creative pattern there is no manifestation without beginning. As artists, the most difficult part is often getting started. How do I begin? In this one day class we will go through a series of exercises and ways of working that you can take home with you- that cultivate and enact beginning. The materials that we will use are paper, watercolor, sumi ink, walnut ink, fine permanent pen and graphite. We will explore through improvisational painting, writing and bookmaking ideas. Our exercises will be put into a small hand made book that will become a visual diary to return to at home. To make this possible, the class will be taught as a creative pattern with a beginning, middle and ending in a contemplative atmosphere - so plan to come for the whole day and leave your cell phones and other electronic devices outside the classroom.
