The horizon provides limitless possibilities in terms of both metaphor and painterly ideas. As artists, we are drawn to the relationship between what we see and the invisible. The horizon line is universally understood, and yet, as contemporary artist Bill Viola states, not a thing in itself or a place that can be found on any map. It is where things appear and disappear. It is our longing- as we walk forward the horizon recedes out of reach.

We will begin with the horizon line as a universal image by examining principles in landscape that can be communicated through writing (such as pattern, distance and scale). The tools we will use include graphite, sumi ink and watercolor.

We will make simple portfolios of our work.
