The Communion
of Writing and Painting
A weeklong workshop with Laurie Doctor
The Calligraphy Centre in Winston-Salem, North Carolina
A
week of stories, poetry, brush practice, painting, writing & a book with
metal binding and covers. We will look at the relationship between writing and
painting, going back 30,000 years to the cave paintings, where there was no
separation between the two. The painting told the story. Through these stories
the cave painters gave us a way to remember the past, a picture of the long
ago, that is not available to us anywhere else. The painting/story also offered
their people vision and cultural cohesion. There was no distinction between
the artist (the one who paints and tells a story) and the shaman (the one who
cares for, heals).
We will see all sorts of examples of the livliness of text and image, including
Delacroix's journal from his trip to Morocco in 1832, Paul Klee's paintings
and Edward Hopper's Journal.
In this workshop we will use graphite, watercolor, acrylic, sumi ink and unique
writing toolsto make a hardcover book. Metal will be incorporated for the covers
and binding. Emphasis is on content created during periods of writing, painting,
poetry and stories.
