Igniting Imagination: The Making of an Art Book
A workshop with Laurie Doctor

Content gives life to form. As artists, we become embodied in our work by creating context: by having something in particular to say or offer to the world. In creating content for our work, there are questions we could ask: How does your work change when you use your own words? Where is the thread of continuity that makes your work your own? What is the creative pattern that supports artistic work? Who has it and who doesn't? How do we create work that has depth, that people want to look at again and again? What is the continuity between our work and our life? In this workshop we will explore content by beginning with brush practice and writing exercises. Imagination lights the doorway to the mysterious, unmapped zone; provides a link between the place where writing and painting meet. By imagination I don't mean the ability to make things up, I mean trusting each person's internal imagery. We will make a small book to carry seeds of ideas from imagery, writing, watercolor and brushwork.
