I have a large and small sketchbook in progress at all times.
The small one I call Not A Day Without A Line, after the name of an exhibit by Paul Klee, and I carry it in my purse. The larger sketchbook is for bigger images and working out ideas for paintings and writing.

This series is just being completed and is titled: "Wake the Sleeping Birds". The title comes from a dream where I was carrying, in a shallow cardboard box, six gray birds lying on their sides. I was about to put them in the trunk of my car, in the way we do things without being aware of what we are doing. I was startled by a voice saying: Wake the sleeping birds!" I woke up with this dream, wondering where to put the birds and how to wake them. Now, at the end of this series, I hear them singing. I often worked to Beethoven's Ninth Symhony: We enter, drunk with fire, daughter of Elysium! |
