The creative process is about having an exchange– with your imagination, the muse, a tree, another person. For six months Deb and I corresponded by post only. No email, phone, text, or social media– nothing instant. It was a surprise to me, all this waiting for a response– how it deepened our sense of each other and every word. This process of communication demanded that I listen, that I write about what matters, that I pay attention to the time in between. That I care about what is important. It brings to mind this poem from Antonio Machado:

The wind, one brilliant day, called
to my soul with an aroma of jasmine.

“In return for the fragrance of my jasmine,
I’d like all the fragrance of your roses.”

“I have no roses, all the flowers
in my garden are dead.”

“Well then, I’ll take the withered petals
and the yellow leaves and the tears of the fountain.”

The wind fled and I wept. And I said to myself:

“What have you done with the garden that was entrusted to you?”

The work of several pairs of correspondents will be on exhibit for the month of June at the R2 Gallery:
