Moon &
Basket Series;
A solo exhibit and poetry reading at Maclaren Markowitz gallery in Boulder,
CO February, 2004
This work is the culmination of a retreat from Thanksgiving to New Year's, when
I spent time outside at night under the moon and stars. Read
some of the poems that I was working with in my paintings.

Liminal
Places
These pieces reflect my writing about place
and memory. I have been teaching at the same campus for twenty years. I arrived
at sunrise one morning with the crows and found myself later talking to my students
about the reciprocal relationship that develops with a place that is tended
to, returning again and again. After a time the place begins to remember and
tend to you.
There is a strong bond between place, memory and the artist. The cave painters
of 30,000 years ago give us a way to remember the past that is available to
us only through them. There was no distinction between the artist (the one who
sees and paints) and the shaman (the one who cares for, heals). I walked into
the classroom feeling this presence.
Read the poem that I wrote that is the text for the paintings.
